The Zaha Hadid Foundation sponsored a major exhibition on Zaha Hadid’s architectural legacy at the Contemporary Arts Center (CAC), Cincinnati, USA, which opened on 22 September 2023 and closed on 28 January 2024. A Permanent Nostalgia for Departure: A Rehearsal on Legacy with Zaha Hadid coincided with the 20th anniversary of its Zaha-designed building, the Lois & Richard Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art (1997-2003). In kind support to CAC, we loaned five of Zaha’s paintings and donated a grant to its accompanying artists’ commissions programme.

Our loan included five of Zaha’s earliest and most regarded paintings, such as Grand Buildings, Trafalgar Square (1985) and Victoria City Aerial (1998), to support Guest Curator Maite Borjabad’s spotlight on the artistic development of Zaha’s career and its contemporary lineage. In addition, our grant to the artists’ commissions programme supported Iraqi artist Rand Abdul Jabbar (b. Baghdad, 1990) in her development of Tektōn (after Zaha, after Malevich), an installation series inspired by Zaha’s painting Malevich’s Tektonik (1976-77).

Carolyn Hefner, Chief of Development, said: ‘The Zaha Hadid Foundation has been invaluable in their support of this exhibition in a variety of ways. We appreciate their dedication to furthering the exploration of Zaha Hadid’s legacy and their partnership in bringing the vision of these emerging artists to life’.
